Privacy
Clap is an app for screenshots and screen recordings on Mac and Windows, with a Chrome extension for whole scrolling pages. It's made by UI8 (Robot Global FZCO). This page says what each of them does with your data.
The Chrome extension
- It does something only when you start a capture: its toolbar button, its keyboard shortcuts or its right-click menu.
- Then it reads the tab you started it on — scrolling the page and taking pictures of it, or recording it as a video — and hands those straight to the Clap app on your computer. They never leave your computer this way.
- It sends nothing to UI8 or anyone else: no analytics, no tracking, no ads. It reads no other tabs and keeps no browsing history.
- It keeps two settings in Chrome: the scroll speed for videos, and its keyboard shortcuts.
The app (Mac and Windows)
- Your screenshots and recordings stay on your computer, in a folder you can open from Clap's menu.
- Signing in is optional. If you do, Clap keeps the sign-in on your computer (in your Mac's Keychain; on Windows, sealed for your Windows account) and asks which plan your account has, about once an hour. Signing in on another computer signs this one out.
- Share Link uploads that one capture to Clap's servers (on Cloudflare), so anyone with its link can see it. Links aren't listed or indexed anywhere. Delete a shared file any time from Clap's menu: its link stops working and the file is deleted. If your plan ends (Studio, or UI8's All-Access pass), links beyond the free plan stop working 30 days later and those files are deleted.
- Anyone can report a shared link; reports go to UI8, which takes down what breaks the rules.
- Updates come from clap.io and download by themselves (turn that off in Clap's Settings → About); checking for one sends nothing about you.
- Usage data: Clap tells us which of its features are used and how often — the kind of capture, a recording's length (rounded), what a saved video used (its shape, frame, zooms, camera), how far its first run got (the welcome window's steps, whether Screen Recording is on, a capture stopped for want of it, the menu opened, seconds taken), updates (downloaded, installed, restarted now or later), the plan, Clap's and the system's versions and the kind of computer. Never what you capture: no file names, window titles, page addresses, text or pictures. It goes through Clap's servers to PostHog (in the US), tied to a random id, and to your Clap account once you sign in. Turn it off in Clap's Settings → General → Privacy.
clap.io
- The site counts its visits with PostHog, through clap.io itself: the pages seen, the buttons clicked, where a visit came from (the site before, a campaign's tags) and the country (from your address, shortened first so it doesn't point to you). No cookies: a random id kept in your browser tells one visit from the next. It honours Do Not Track.
- Buying on clap.io goes through Stripe, UI8's payment provider; Clap keeps what you bought and its email receipt address with your Clap account, and counts the purchase (the plan and its price) in the same usage data.
